Teach the students the difference between "a" and "the".

Pages: 21

How to use:

Materials:
The cards (make sure to download all 3 sets!)
A box/hat/etc with the color names on it.

1) Tape the pictures around the room. I recommend laminating the pictures!
2) Divide the students into teams.
3) First demonstrate "a" and "the" using objects around the room. Example:

Go up to a random girl. Say, "This is A girl."
Then say, "THE girl has black hair."

Go up to a chair. "This is A chair."
"THE chair is small."

etc etc etc. Make sure to pick things that there are multiples of AND to stress the a/the words. They should start to get the idea at this point.

4) Now it's time to play the game! Start by shouting something along the lines of "OH MY GOD! THERE'S A CAT/DOG/DRAGONFLY!" The students must shout "WHAT CAT?!?!?!" You say, "A CAT!!" The students run around and collect as many cats as they can find. Each team gets a point for the number of cats they collected.

Then pull a color from your box. Say, "OH! THE CAT IS BLACK!" etc. The team with the black cat gets a point.

5) Do this for a few round, then switch it up. Say something like "OH NO! WHERE IS THE MONKEY!!?!?!?!" The students shout, "WHAT MONKEY?!?!?!" You say, "THE RED MONKEY!!!!" The students run to grab the red monkey. The team with the red monkey gets a point. Teams that grab a monkey OTHER than the red monkey lose one point.

6) Switch it up until your students are worn out.

Note: If you don't have a color printer, just print up multiples of the white animal cards and color them yourself!
